My passion is…
Do you know what your passion is?
Passion is a big word and as millennials, you will always hear us say, “I would love to do my passion but…” Let me ask you this, do you really know what your passion is? Well, I only got a clear understanding of it after reading the book about Ikigai.
As the book says, passion is the intersection between what you’re good at and what you love to do. Well, it seems easy to define but it gets hard when you start really thinking about it.
It’s hard to determine what you are good at because it is subjective. You based it on how good you think you are and of course how other people think about how good you are. Why is it hard? Because limiting beliefs can prevent you from believing that you are good at something. Say deep inside you, you know you are a good writer but the moment you hear people saying your writing sucks, then you’ll start doubting yourself and if you have low self-confidence, you will most probably think that your writing sucks. So friends, if you think you are good at something, believe that you are good at it, pretty soon, people will start to believe it too!
Now, there’s the other side of the coin, other people believe you are good at something but you deny or brush it off. For example, other people think I’m good at playing the drums. I think I’m ok but sometimes I feel that I’m not good enough. So if passion is what you love and what you are good at, me playing the drums, or you as a writer who believes in other people saying you suck at writing cannot say that it is our passion.
What’s my point? Most millennials dream of following their passion. But it will be hard to follow your passion if you don’t know what it is, worse, you don’t believe that it is indeed your passion. You have to believe that you love what you are doing and that you are good at for it to be your passion. When determining you’re passion, disregard what other people will say. Listen to your inner voice, believe in your capabilities and listen to what your heart is saying. Your passion is yours to own and not for other people to critique. Own it, then pursue it!
